Balance is now on the App Store — track your household mental load together

After months of development and testing with real couples, Balance is officially available on the iOS App Store — free to download, and built for any couple who’s ever felt like one person is carrying more than their fair share.

Why we built Balance

The conversation about mental load — the invisible cognitive work of running a household — has been growing for years. Most couples know the feeling: one partner remembers everything (the dentist appointment, the dwindling bin bags, whose turn it is to call the plumber), while the other genuinely doesn’t see it happening.

The problem isn’t bad intentions. The problem is that this kind of work is invisible by design. It lives entirely in someone’s head. There’s no shared dashboard, no receipt, nothing to point at and say: “this is what I’m doing.”

We built Balance to change that.

What Balance does

Balance gives couples a structured, evidence-based way to measure, visualise, and discuss the distribution of household mental load — across all four types of domestic work that research identifies:

  • Operational — the physical tasks: cooking, cleaning, laundry, school runs
  • Cognitive — the planning and remembering: appointments, schedules, budgets
  • Emotional — managing moods, wellbeing, and family relationships
  • Coordination — social calendars, admin, gift buying, staying in touch with both families

Up to 30 personalizable questions — weighted by frequency, effort, and visibility — surface exactly how much of each type of load each partner carries.

Key features at launch

Mental load distribution After completing the assessment, you see a clear breakdown of who carries what percentage of the load — by category and overall. No guessing. No arguing about impressions. Just data.

Partner comparison (Premium) When both partners complete the assessment independently, Balance shows where you agree and where your perceptions diverge. The perception gap — the difference between how much load you think you carry and how much your partner thinks you carry — is often where the most important conversations start.

Weekly Check-in (Premium) A 5-minute weekly check-in tracks whether your distribution is improving, staying flat, or getting worse over time. Progress becomes visible.

To Do with calendar integration (Premium) Household tasks live alongside your calendar, with shared events you can both see and manage — turning assessment results into concrete action.

AI-powered insights (Premium) After each check-in, Balance generates a personalised analysis combining your load distribution and weekly responses. It names the patterns creating the most imbalance and suggests where to focus next.

Who it’s for

Balance is for any couple who shares a household — with or without children, with or without a formal division of labour. If you’ve ever had the argument about “I do more than you” without being able to resolve it with data, Balance is built for you.

It works especially well when both partners commit to completing the assessment independently. The comparison isn’t about winning — it’s about having a productive, evidence-based conversation instead of a circular one.

Free to start

Balance is free to download on the App Store. The free tier gives you the full assessment and your personal load distribution. Premium unlocks partner comparison, weekly check-ins, To Do, and AI insights — and covers both partners under a single subscription.
